Fresh out of prison, it's time to rebuild your rep in the supercharged Skate 2.

Skate 2 Updated Preview

The newly playable Eric Koston catching some air

Skate 2 takes place in New San Vanelona notoriously named after San Francisco, Barcelona, and Vancouver, post earthquake. Still notorious for your original Skate days and fresh out of the slammer, this time around you start out doing sponsor related challenges and photography instead of trivial ones that force you to mingle with the locals because after all you were only M.I.A.

Hippy's CAN jump

The amount of possible tricks in Skate 2's arsenal has been doubled. Of all the new additions such as handplants and skitching, the classic hippy jump instantly became my favorite. I couldn't resist repeatedly attempting the seemingly impossible over cars, pedestrians, and picnic tables. The hard work of eating asphalt time after time eventually pays off similar to actual skateboarding. After enough attempts and with the right amount of finesse I easily cleared a picnic table hippy style. If you become adept enough even cars become a piece of cake to jump over. But there is a dark side to wielding such expertise. While harassing peds via the timeless hippy jump I soon found myself face down on the ground and it wasn't from a faulty trick. Pedestrians don't have the patience to put up with silly antics this time around and will lay the smackdown on your ass without thinking twice.

In addition to fresh new tricks, you are now able to leave your board and independently control your hands and feet. As arbitrary as these latest powers may seem it is a crucial little tidbit that vastly spices up the experience. Not only can you hassle innocent bystanders with your abilities, now you can drag and place in-game objects to create the ultimate skate spot. If you are proud of your creation, Skate 2 allows you to upload your custom spot and show it off to all your buddies and even vote on who has the sickest handiwork. Bored of making your own creations? You can also download other gamers' spots.

Exercising the ability to skitch

One is the loneliest number

The original Skate suffered from its faulty multiplayer but EA hasn't left our prayers unanswered. Skate 2 comes equipped with over 100+ multiplayer online activities ranging from simple point collecting to the most air time. These challenges pit you against your friends in a struggle for the spotlight and even give the opportunity to rake in some cold hard cash. If you aren't feeling competitive there is a leisurely free-skate mode that you can play with up to 5 other friends which is easily accessible from a simple menu at anytime during single player mode so the transition to multiplayer online is practically seamless. If you are the busy type who rarely makes it online you are in for a treat. Skate 2 keeps track of the highest scores you and your friends have earned in events so you can leave that special someone a high score to beat next time they log in to their live account.

Overall, Skate 2 looks a lot more refined since our last hands-on experience. When its release date rolls around this January there should be a lot to look forward to.
