2D or not 2D; that is the question.

Alright so basically this thread revolves around games that were originally 2D and were reinvented in 3D. My/our main concern is were or not they should have been transformed. I know that a 3D version doesn't necessarily end the original as a series but. . . yeah. Here are some examples that I have considered. . .

1. Donkey Kong- In my opinion Donkey Kong 64 was a huge step backward in quality from just about ANY 2D iterations. Luckily, Nintendo was smart enough to reinvigorate DK with Jungle Beat (especially the Wii version).

2. Crash Bandicoot- This is a big one for me as I love the gameplay mechanics of the original games. It was good enough IMO to hold it's quality through it's changes in dev teams.

3. Bionic Commando- I was VERY excited to hear Capcom is making a sequel to their 2D remake. . . let's just forget about that 3D trash.

4. Golden Axe- Sega. . .. where are you?

5. Sonic- This is a bit of a debate IMO as the original Adventure games were great. . . but since they left that in place of just about any of the other releases. . . WTF?

6. Megaman- I know there are a lot of Megaman 64 and origin fans here but for an old schooler. . . FUCK NO!!! Comparatively they are not even in the same class. Once again I applaud Capcom for retaining the 2D games.

Feel free to either discuss these or bring up any 2D to 3D games that you feel were sub-par comparatively.

FF, sometimes. While it gained a ton of advances in gameplay, it lost some depth in story and writing while it gained depth in terms of graphics. IV and VI still hold up to a great light in comparison to the 3D games. IX really was one of the few that did the best of both worlds... well.. since it was a blend of both worlds.

MK. For obvious reasons.

thats all I can think for now.

I think FF (and RPG games in general) have gained from their transfer to 3D but MK. . . HELL YEAH!!! MK4 was "good" but after that the series went downhill FAST!!!

Not in the GBA titles.

It gained and lost. Sadly the writing is getting worse. Such as XIII. XII, on the other hand, is weird that its a greatly written and well voiced game, but a bad narrative

And not many fighters are great in 3D, sadly.

Castlevania: The PS2 and Xbox 3D ones weren't complete atrocities, but they weren't nearly as good as the 2D ones.

DK64 was great.

Anyways, after Sonic adventure, I lost my faith in good Sonic games. Hopefully the revival of these 2D sonic games change that.

KoF Maximum Impact was crappy on its own merits, much less compared to the 2D KoF games.
